Bermuda Dunes Country Club
In 1957, there were four country clubs in the valley: Thunderbird, Tamarisk, O’Donnell, and Indian Wells; Eldorado was just being built. A group from New York had come to the Valley, and after visiting all of the existing golf courses, concluded that they were all too flat and a course with some hills would be a good addition. Construction started on February 14, 1958. The instruction to the famous golf course designer, Billy Bell was as follows: “Make the course long enough to test the professionals but make the fairways wide enough so that the average golfer will not always be out of bounds or in hazard.”
The course and the clubhouse, which included a pro shop, locker rooms, a dining room and a cocktail lounge opened March 1, 1959. The opening featured a Pro-Celebrity and Media Golf Tournament of major proportions and the grand opening gala was a star-studded event including Clark Gable, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Desi Arnez, and Bill “Hopalong Cassidy” Boyd.
A lot of history has been made at Bermuda Dunes. The club participated in 49 of the Bob Hope Classic tournaments. There are only 2 Country Clubs in the United States with a longer association with the PGA: Augusta National and Pebble Beach. It is the site of Arnold Palmer’s first Classic win in 1960. It was only a few months later that Palmer went on to win the National Open crown at Cherry Hills in Denver. Arnold closed out his career here at Bermuda Dunes Country Club with his last PGA Tour win in 1973. Palmer has often said it was his win in Palm Springs that gave him the confidence he needed to become golf’s top winner.
Our Bermuda Dunes golf club has been home to world renowned celebrities such as Clark Gable and Arnold Palmer, who have both lived in the Bermuda Dunes community. Heart stopping tournament play by PRO golfers include Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, Corey Pavin, John Cook, Phil Mickelson and scores of others.
